The Magick of Hecate's Moon

Hecate, the Queen of Witches, even though She rules all phases of the Moon, as She is a Triple Goddess in Her own  right, as she is Hecate the Maiden, Hecate the Mother and Hecate the Crone, most associate Her with the Dark Moon in which She rules the darkest night of the month. The Dark moon celebrates secrecy, sorcery, prophecy, and the deepest mysteries of the universe. It is a time to let your dark side be free. It is the sacred time of the Crone. Draw down the Dark Moon in the form of the Dark Goddess, Hecate. The Dark Moon is also a time of the dark fairies, banshees,  spirits, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night. In fact, the Dark Moon can be viewed as a monthly version of Samhain.

Like its twin, the Full Moon, the veils between the worlds are thinner at the Dark Moon and it is psychically very active. The Dark of the Moon corresponds to both menstruation and menopause in the female reproductive cycle. It is symbolized by the Crone, who is the Goddess of letting go, and endings before the cycle begins anew.

At the Dark Moon, we wear the darkest colors, especially black. We wear black and red jewelry, obsidian, jet onyx, dark garnet, and dark red carnelian. It is a perfect time of scrying with mirrors, especially dark mirrors, and crystal or obsidian balls. Contacting spirits of the dead and otherworldly beings is easier on this night, using Ouija, mirrors, meditation and other arcane methods. It is a good time to visit burial mounds, cemeteries, barrows, cairns, or any sacred place. Dark animals are sacred to the Dark Moon, including all Corvidae (ravens, crows and rooks), black cats, bats, dogs, hens, rabbits and horses. Often Witches transformed themselves into dark animals on this night so they could roam undetected on moonless nights.

The Dark Moon is also a time to work widdershins and contrary magick, reversing the general order of things, such as in a ritual. It is a time to unwind what has been wound, and to look at things in the opposite perspective. Sometimes divinatory readings at this time will come out in reverse of normal, and these are called "contrary readings." The Scottish and Irish Samhain tradition of walking in backwards at the Dumb Supper is an example of a contrary ritual.

The darker aspects of magick are more effective at this time such as binding, blasting, and cursing. But remember the rule of Karma, what you send rebounds on you by a rule of three. Because it is night when negative energy sometimes abounds and baneful spirits can roam free, practitioners of magick and the psychically sensitive must make very sure to ward themselves and to draw circles of protection. The Dark Moon is thus a dangerous time for the unwary and foolish.

Cosmically, Black Holes in space reflect on a greater scale the energy of the Dark Moon-----vast, mysterious and powerful. Like the Crone, Black Holes draw the energy inward before the circle turns again, and She expels the pulsating energy back into the universe to form new galaxies.

Remember; however , to not hesitate to call upon Hecate whatever the phase of the Moon is, as She is Maiden, Mother and Crone.  She is the three and the one.
